The ANU Queer* Department represents and advocates for LGBTQIASB+ students at ANU. This includes, but is not limited to, students identifying as lesbian, gay, bisexual/biromantic, transgender, intersex, asexual/aromantic, brotherboy, sistergirl, non-binary, gender-diverse, pansexual/panromantic, polysexual/polyromantic, and questioning.
If you're a queer student at ANU, you are automatically a member of the Department.
The ANU Queer* Department is led by an eight-person autonomous, elected committee. They're here to represent, advocate for, and provide support to you during your time at university.
The ANU Queer* Department is one of six autonomous Departments operating as part of the ANU Students' Association to represent marginalised groups in our community. 'Autonomous' means that our membership only includes queer students at ANU, although allies are welcome at any non-autonomous events and campaigns we may run.
The ANU Queer* Department is the only group on campus that is run for queer students, by queer students. Our objective is to promote the welfare of, and further the interests of our members. We achieve this by representing, advocating for, and fostering a safe, inclusive and welcoming ANU for the LGBTQIASB+ student community.
All queer students – undergraduate, postgraduate, and HDR – are automatically members of the Department. Here’s how you can get involved:
Autonomous Space: Visit our autonomous student space – the Queer* Space – in the Copland Building (24 Kingsley Place) for relaxing, making friends, studying, or having a cup of tea or coffee between classes.
Meetings & Events: Join our fortnightly collective meetings (fortnightly during the semester at 6pm on even Mondays – weeks 2, 4, 6, etc.) or attend our regular social events including coffee catchups and reading groups.
Gender Affirming Gear: We offer free gender-affirming gear (binders, bra inserts, packing gear, and tucking underwear) to support trans and gender-diverse students.
Other Ways to Contribute: Join working groups for our Queerphobia Reports and Queer* Ball, and contribute your art or written works to our Queer* Zine.
Allies are also encouraged to get involved in non-autonomous campaigns and events.
The ANU Queer* Department is led by an autonomous, elected commitee of eight people. Their role is to oversee and execute the work of the Department – organising collective action, facilitating social events, creating community spaces, and much more!
